Turn off the hot water heater when you go on vacation.
This helps avoid energy waste. Locate the water heater breaker in the electrical panel or turn it off at the unit.
- Tank-based hot water heaters lose significant amounts of heat when they are on. In periods when hot water is not used, this waste can be easily prevented by simply shutting the water heater off.
- If you're not comfortable turning off your water heater, consider setting your water heater to vacation mode or simply turn down the temperature to the lowest setting.
